The Jockey Club Augmented Reality in Arts Education Project officially started on 2 October 2021.

Our journey started in Yau Ma Tei, where participants separated into four teams to look into four historical streets: Reclamation Street, Shanghai Street, Temple Street, and Portland Street, each with fascinating stories throughout the history.

To explore the historical narratives of the locale, participants examined on-site objects found on the streets and interviewed locals to recollect memories. With these resources, they were able to dive into the past of Yau Ma Tei’s streets through a series of sensory observations from the relevance of sight and touch to associations with hearing, smell, taste, and ultimately our imagination and perception of memory. Through this research, the teams had a foundation to begin developing their preliminary conceptual framework for their AR public art projects.
To better understand the whole creative process, the participants moved from Yau Ma Tei to Hong Kong Baptist University’s Academy of Visual Arts to partake in an Open Introductory Lecture by Masaki Fujihata. He presented the conceptualisation and the process of his AR public art project “HKACT! Act 1 BeHere” (2018) and how it was used to interpret and developed a new interdisciplinary AR art educational project: this very Jockey Club Augmented Reality in Arts Education Project.
